Using AI (Yes, Even ChatGPT) Can Harm Your Marketing If You’re Not Using the Right Prompts + Analytics
I said what I said.
Come at me, internet. 🫖
But for real—if you’re tossing half-baked prompts into ChatGPT and expecting it to drop a genius-level marketing plan in your lap?
You might be setting yourself (and your business) up for a very generic, very ineffective strategy.
Since AI cracked open its shiny digital portal to the public, I’ve been witnessing the same pattern with clients:
“I asked ChatGPT how to promote my course on Instagram…”
“I used AI to write a launch plan…”
“I googled trending hashtags for testimonials…”
And listen—I love that you’re using the tools. I do.
But this is your gentle reminder that AI can only take you as far as the clarity of your prompt and the data you’re using to guide the strategy.
So today, you’re getting a mini-masterclass (aka a loving vent) from your Digital Midwife.
💻 Let’s dissect a real example from a real client:
Prompt: “How do I promote my course on Instagram?”
One of my clients dropped this into ChatGPT for her local, in-person offering.
What she got back? A marketing framework loaded with Reels, generic hooks, and broad hashtags that look cute but do not convert.
It wasn’t terrible advice…
It just wasn’t contextual—and context is everything in grounded, ethical, strategic marketing.
Here’s what Chat missed (and why her OG strategy we discussed was still the best plan):
- ChatGPT recommended Reels — which, sure, can get high reach. But reach ≠ relevance. Most viewers were not local. They couldn’t actually attend.
- It generated made-up hashtags that don’t exist, or pulled ones so broad they’d be buried faster than a seed in sand.
- It ignored her analytics, which clearly showed the magic happens in her Stories. That’s where trust builds and relationships root.
What did we do instead?
🔍 Looked at her IG analytics
📍 Geotagged and mentioned her local area
🤝 Focused on collaborations in her community
🌀 Re-used content in Stories and carousels where her people actually engage
💬 Shared in wellness Facebook groups and with local businesses
This is where marketing becomes an ecosystem—not a vending machine.
AI can offer ideas, but it can’t feel the soil of your strategy unless you know what season you’re planting in.
👉 Psst… if you’ve ever felt stuck trying to figure out the “right” thing to ask ChatGPT, or ended up with copy-paste advice that just doesn’t sound like you?
I created a workbook just for this—Train ChatGPT for Your Business.
It’s a juicy guide packed with 100+ strategic prompts, examples, and AI-savvy marketing wisdom for coaches, creatives, and entrepreneurs who want to co-create with AI (not be bossed around by it).
You can think of it as your botanical garden of marketing prompts—ready to be planted, nurtured, and harvested your way. 🌱
🔮 Let’s talk about prompts like “What’s trending for sharing testimonials?”
You’re not wrong to ask. But let’s zoom out:
- Is your offer local or global?
- Are you selling 1:1 services or a digital product?
- What’s the vibe of your brand—sassy, sacred, silly?
- Is your goal connection, visibility, or immediate sales?
Without this nuance, you’ll get ideas that sound good but don’t stick.
That’s the catch with AI: It’s trained on content from everywhere… not your audience, your voice, or your values. Unless you bring that to the table.
🌿 Mindset Shifts for Intentional Prompting
(The Rooted Way to Use AI in Your Business)
1. From “Quick Fix” → To “Long-Term Growth”
Ask: How can I use AI to support my evergreen content, not just tomorrow’s trending post?
2. From “What’s Trending?” → To “What Aligns With My Clients + Offers?”
Prompt from the inside out, not from what’s happening externally in the algorithm.
3. From “I Need to Sound Like a Thought Leader” → To “I Want to Sound Like Me”
Train your AI to understand your brand voice, not mimic someone else’s.
4. From “Give Me Content” → To “Let’s Co-Create Content That Resonates”
AI isn’t your brain. It’s your brainstorming buddy. You’re still the creative heart of your biz.
5. From “How Can I Go Viral?” → To “How Can I Be of Service + Build Trust?”
Ask how your message helps, educates, or connects—not just how it performs.
6. From “Just Get It Done” → To “Make It Rooted + Relevant”
Slower prompting often leads to better results. Reflect first, then prompt. Be inspired and prompt again based on your results.
7. From “Blank Slate” → To “Let Me Feed AI My Foundations First”
Upload your values, services, goals, dream client—this is how you get bespoke answers, not generic fluff.
8. From “Make It Sell” → To “Make It Connect + Convert Naturally”
Sustainable Marketing isn’t about pressure—it’s about clarity, honesty, and resonance.
9. From “Do It For Me” → To “Support Me In Doing It Better”
Use AI to enhance your wisdom, not replace it. Your lived experience is the core of your strategy.
10. From “I Have to Use AI Like Everyone Else” → To “I Get to Use AI My Way”
Build a workflow that matches your energy, rhythm, and season—not the hustle-based norm.
🎨 Prompting is an Art. Strategy is the Canvas.
I’ve been using AI since the early days.
But here’s the secret sauce: I don’t let AI lead—I collaborate with it. I pair it with my lived experience, deep client insight, and a slow marketing approach that’s been ripening over 20 years.
Prompts without data are like planting seeds without checking the forecast.
And a prompt like “How do I sell on Instagram?” is asking the wrong question.
The better question is:
“What part of my content strategy already works—and how can I use AI to enhance it with aligned ideas, not replace it with random ones?”
So, if you’re building a business rooted in intuition, trust, and sustainability…
Don’t outsource your whole strategy to the algorithm + AI.
✅ Use AI with intention.
✅ Use analytics with discernment.
✅ Use your voice—because no machine can replicate that.
If you want guidance on what to actually ask AI, and how to craft marketing that’s aligned with your energy and goals, I’ve got you covered.
