Systems, Nature & Horoscopes: What They Teach Us About Building a Sustainable Business
Stay with me here. Lol. You might be thinking — what on earth do horoscopes, marketing systems, and nature have in common?
For me, they’ve always been entwined.
This piece explores how business systems, nature’s ecosystems, and astrology all teach us the same lesson: sustainable growth happens through rhythm, structure, and relationship — not force.
How Nature Taught Me About Systems (And Why Business Needs Them Too)
Back in the mid-90s, when all I had access to was the newspaper and Seventeen magazine, I would cut out horoscopes and paste them into a notebook. Not because I thought they were 100% accurate, but because they hinted at something bigger: a system. A rhythm. A recognition that the cosmos — like nature — has an order to it.
And nature itself? That was my first teacher. I spent hours in the forest, often alone, singing to trees and watching how everything was connected. The mycelium underfoot, the birds above, the slow rhythm of decay and rebirth. Nothing existed in isolation. Everything was part of a system. My parents and grandparents lived off the land, and though I was the first generation to be raised in an urban setting, I spent summers working the land with them. That time taught me the ways of balance and reciprocity, and how caring for ecosystems means honouring both what is given and what is taken.
What This Has to Do With Business Systems and Marketing Strategy
Fast forward to now: that’s what I do as a marketer. I build systems.
When someone sees your IG post, that’s the first touchpoint. When they click your link in bio, that’s a second step — your invitation. If they sign up for a freebie, they’ve stepped deeper into your ecosystem. When they purchase, it’s because they feel supported and aligned within the system you’ve created for them. You’ve cultivated connection and trust.
That’s why it’s essential to create multiple pathways — tiers of access that meet people where they are. Some may only ever engage with your free content and newsletter. And that’s beautiful. Others may walk the whole spiral path, from curious follower to committed client. Both matter. Both belong.
Business Systems Mirror Nature’s Cycles
Just like in nature, no ecosystem survives on one type of life alone. A forest thrives because the soil feeds the roots, the canopy provides shelter, old trees decompose and give way to new growth. The cycle of renewal keeps everything alive. Business systems mirror this: your audience touchpoints are the soil, your invitations and offers are the roots and branches, your deeper programs are the canopy. Integration and reflection — even endings — are like decomposition, creating space for fresh ideas to sprout. It’s all one living, breathing ecosystem.
Honouring Different Rhythms in Business Growth
Within every ecosystem, accessibility matters.
Not every seed sprouts in the same way or at the same pace. Some need direct sun, others thrive in shade.
In business, this means offering varied points of entry:
free resources, lower-cost offers, or deeper long-term containers.
Honouring the diversity of how people show up makes your ecosystem sustainable.
It creates a living business where everyone can find their way in—at their own rhythm.
Astrology – Nature Reminds Us That Business Moves in Cycles
Astrology reminds us too: everything moves in cycles. Mercury retrogrades, lunar phases, seasonal shifts — they’re all systems. And so is your business. The question isn’t: “Do you have a system?” The question is: “Does your system feel alive, aligned, and nourishing?”
This is what a holistic business strategy looks like — one that blends systems, intuition, energy, and structure instead of treating them as separate worlds.
Systems Are Meant to Support You
Because unlike the bots I collaborate with, I still need real nourishment. I have a body, a hunger for food and beauty. Systems are here to support that, not replace it.
At the end of the day, your business ecosystem is like a horoscope. Not a fixed prediction, but a guide. A mirror. A rhythm that reminds you — you don’t have to do it all at once. You just have to move with the cycle you’re in, letting the systems you’ve cultivated hold you through the ebbs and flows.
At the heart of it, building systems isn’t about stripping your work of soul — it’s about creating structures that give you space to rest, breathe, and create. Systems are the roots that hold you steady when the winds change. They’re what let you show up consistently without burning out, and what give your community a sense of safety and trust when they step into your world.
